CADO, 123Carbon, and the Assure SAF Registry have announced an agreement to implement interoperability between their respective platforms — a move that addresses one of the most significant structural risks facing SAF markets as they scale: double-counting of sustainability attributes.
Why This Matters
SAF registries are the accounting layer beneath every verified climate claim an airline or corporate buyer makes. They track the chain of custody for SAF sustainability attributes and issue the certificates that underpin those claims. As the market has grown, so has the number of registries operating in parallel. Without interoperability, the same batch of SAF attributes could theoretically be registered and claimed on more than one platform — inflating emissions reductions on paper and undermining buyer confidence.
Who’s Involved
- CADO — A European SAF registry focused on the EU market and ReFuelEU Aviation compliance
- 123Carbon — A registry platform managing SAF certificates and sustainability data
- Assure SAF Registry — Operated by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), widely used for RSB-certified SAF globally
Together, the three platforms cover a substantial share of European and international SAF certificate issuance, making the scope of this agreement meaningful rather than symbolic.
What Interoperability Looks Like
The organisations will implement technical data-sharing mechanisms allowing verified SAF attributes to be recognised across all three platforms. For fuel producers and buyers, this reduces administrative burden while improving market transparency.
Market Context
The timing aligns with the maturation of SAF market infrastructure. As ReFuelEU blending mandates take effect and corporate SAF purchasing grows, demand for trustworthy, auditable certification has intensified. Interoperability between competing registries is unusual in commodity markets and suggests the SAF sector is prioritising collective credibility over platform lock-in.
