HONG KONG—The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) and Full Vision Capital have launched the 4th TERA-Award Smart Energy Innovation Competition, welcoming global entries from technology teams with groundbreaking solutions for a zero-carbon future. Known as the “Oscars of Smart Energy Innovation,” the competition awards up to $1 million in prizes and connects winners with investors and corporations for commercialization.
Applications for the competition are open until April 9, 2025, inviting innovators across six main tracks: Renewable Energy, Energy Storage and Conversion, CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage), Green Fuels and Hydrogen Energy, Intelligent Energy Systems, and Smart City initiatives. A new category this year—Green Fuels—includes technologies like Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), sustainable biomass processing, and green methanol, underscoring the competition’s role in advancing energy transitions.
Dr. Peter Lee Ka-kit, Founder of the TERA-Award, emphasized the competition’s role as an accelerator for startups:
“The TERA-Award connects startups with investors, expediting their journey from lab innovation to market success.”
Towngas’s legacy and past successes highlight the competition’s potential impact. Previous winners, such as i2Cool Limited and Luquos Energy, have secured funding and scaled operations. i2Cool’s electricity-free cooling technologies are now in use globally, while Luquos Energy has launched its first sulfur-based flow battery project and is targeting large-scale production by 2027.
Mr. Alan Chan Ying-lung, Executive Chairman of the TERA-Award Organizing Committee, encouraged participation:
“With Towngas’ 162 years of experience, our green sandbox empowers startups to transform bold ideas into impactful solutions, creating a cleaner, more sustainable world.”
The competition builds on Towngas’s track record of nurturing startups like EcoCeres, a global SAF leader, and EnerVenue, a pioneer in metal-hydrogen battery energy storage technologies.
