Goldboro, Nova Scotia – Simply Blue Group has taken a significant step in its North American expansion by securing the Goldboro site in Nova Scotia, Canada, for its newest Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility. The 755-acre site, comprising land formerly owned by Pieridae and the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, marks a major development in Simply Blue Group’s strategy to produce sustainable fuels at scale.
Hugh Kelly, CEO & Co-Founder of Simply Blue Group, emphasized the strategic importance of this project: “We are very excited to be developing the Goldboro site into a renewable energy park. The sustainable aviation fuel that we will produce there will play an essential part in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting the aviation industry’s transition to more sustainable operations.”
The Renewable Energy Park (REP) will be powered by renewable electricity generated from Simply Blue Group’s solar and wind farms located in the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s. This energy will be transmitted directly to the Goldboro site via a dedicated transmission line, ensuring a seamless and sustainable energy supply for the production facility. The site is expected to produce approximately 150,000 tonnes of SAF annually by 2028, capitalizing on Nova Scotia’s rich biomass and water resources.
“We are very excited to be developing the Goldboro site into a renewable energy park. The sustainable aviation fuel that we will produce there will play an essential part in reducing dependence on fossil fuels,” said Hugh Kelly, CEO & Co-Founder of Simply Blue Group.
Michael Galvin, Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Hydrogen and Sustainable Fuels, highlighted the extensive planning behind the project: “It’s great to be finally launching this project. A lot of work has gone into due diligence and engineering over the past three years, and we’ve already secured a supply agreement with Wagner Forest NS Ltd. to source 700,000 tonnes of green biomass per annum.”
Nova Scotia’s robust biomass resources, coupled with its established renewable energy infrastructure, make it an ideal location for this SAF production site. The project is expected to provide a stable, long-term market for Nova Scotian woodlot owners, enhancing the sustainability of local forestry practices.
Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables, expressed strong support for the initiative: “Nova Scotia is poised to become a leader in green hydrogen. This industry will help us grow our green economy in Nova Scotia, with benefits for generations to come.”
Laurel Broten, CEO of Invest in Canada, added: “Simply Blue Group’s renewable energy park is a transformative project for Goldboro, Nova Scotia, and the sustainable fuels sector in Canada. We are thrilled to support this initiative as it taps into the province’s existing resources and creates new opportunities in the vital industry of sustainable aviation fuels.”
With the project expected to be fully operational by 2028, Nova Scotia is positioned to become a key player in the global SAF supply chain, contributing significantly to the aviation sector’s shift towards more sustainable fuel sources.
