ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — October 16, 2024 – In a transformative partnership, Power2X and Advario are developing a world-scale production and storage hub for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam. This cutting-edge project is designed to accelerate the aviation sector’s decarbonization efforts, marking a major milestone in the shift toward greener energy.
The Power2X production facility will produce over 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF annually, using green methanol derived from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon. This synthetic, non-fossil fuel offers a lifecycle emissions reduction of 90% compared to conventional jet fuel, making it critical for the future of aviation.
Leading Europe’s SAF Production
With enough capacity to fully fuel around 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York each year, this will be the largest e-SAF production facility announced to date. The hub’s strategic location in the Port of Rotterdam will provide direct access to European airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, establishing it as a key player in the distribution of sustainable aviation fuels across the continent.
In collaboration with Power2X, Advario will develop a sophisticated storage and logistics facility with a capacity of 230,000 cubic meters, featuring both marine and rail facilities to ensure the stable supply of green molecules. Together, these efforts will support the supply chain for SAF and other low-carbon fuels, providing a crucial infrastructure to meet Europe’s increasing SAF demand.
Supporting Europe’s Energy Transition
This development aligns with Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which mandates the increased use of SAF, including e-SAF, from 2030 onward. Once operational, the hub will contribute 40% of the required e-SAF volumes in Europe, solidifying its role in supporting the region’s decarbonization goals.
Occo Roelofsen, Founder and CEO of Power2X, emphasized the strategic importance of the project, stating, “This facility highlights our commitment to building the next generation of energy infrastructure and accelerating the energy transition. By strategically positioning this hub in Rotterdam, we aim to make competitive e-SAF production at a global scale a reality, supporting Europe’s decarbonization goals.”
Advario’s CEO, Bas Verkooijen, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Our partnership with Power2X aligns perfectly with Advario’s ambition to be a leader in the energy transition. This project is a key part of our long-term strategy to provide essential infrastructure for sustainable energy production.”
Rotterdam’s Role in SAF Production
Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, emphasized the port’s growing role as a hub for SAF production, stating, “The SAF facilities in Rotterdam currently supply 24% of Europe’s aviation fuel needs. This project, with its innovative approach and massive production scale, will be critical to meeting Europe’s SAF targets.”
The project further reinforces Rotterdam’s position as a leader in the green energy transition, with extensive efforts to convert former fossil fuel infrastructure into hubs for sustainable production. The partnership between Power2X and Advario will utilize the former Aluchemie site, acquired by Advario in 2023, to establish a facility with both production and storage capacities.
“This e-SAF hub in Rotterdam underscores our leadership in driving decarbonization and delivering sustainable solutions at scale for the aviation industry.”

Looking Ahead
The Power2X-Advario e-SAF hub is expected to start production around the turn of the decade and will play a crucial role in helping Europe meet its SAF targets and achieve long-term sustainability in aviation. This initiative will not only reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint but also support Europe’s broader goals for green innovation and economic growth.
