Tokyo, Japan – Nippon Express Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., has been chosen by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a designated cargo agent for its “Project to Promote SAF Use in Air Cargo Transport for Corporate Compliance with Scope 3 Requirements.” This selection highlights Nippon Express’s dedication to environmental sustainability, particularly in reducing CO2 emissions across supply chains through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s project is a forward-thinking initiative aimed at encouraging companies to reduce their overall carbon footprint. It specifically focuses on Scope 3 emissions—those generated indirectly through activities such as product transportation and business travel. The project provides subsidies to cover the additional costs of using SAF, making it more accessible for businesses committed to decarbonization.
Nippon Express’s Role and Commitment:
Nippon Express has been actively involved in expanding the use of SAF as part of its broader environmental initiatives. The company has introduced programs like the “NX-GREEN SAF Program” and participated in ANA’s “SAF Flight Initiative,” both of which promote the adoption of sustainable fuels in the aviation sector. This latest recognition from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government further solidifies Nippon Express’s leadership in the push towards greener logistics solutions.
In its efforts to tackle climate change, the NX Group, to which Nippon Express belongs, has set ambitious targets to reduce in-house emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2013 levels. Furthermore, the group aims to contribute to a carbon-neutral society by 2050, encompassing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The group’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its pursuit of Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) certification.
“Nippon Express’s selection as a cargo agent for this SAF initiative underscores its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions across supply chains.”
Looking Ahead:
As a key player in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s SAF initiative, Nippon Express will continue to drive the adoption of sustainable practices in the logistics industry. The company’s participation in this project is a testament to its ongoing efforts to address material environmental issues and achieve the NX Group Sustainability Vision.
