Dallas, Texas: The Naveen Jindal School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas has launched a new professional certificate program titled Sustainability Strategy Management in Aviation. The 17-hour course addresses the increasing need for sustainability awareness in the aviation and transportation sectors, aiming to equip industry professionals with the knowledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Spearheaded by Samar Khan, sustainability lead at JSOM’s Executive Education Area and founder of TripAI Technologies, the program highlights the importance of well-defined sustainability strategies in aviation and travel. “This program focuses on guiding the industry toward compliance and sustainable practices,” Khan explained.
“SAF can reduce emissions from existing fleets while electric and hybrid technologies are still developing,” said Samar Khan, Sustainability Lead at JSOM.
The certificate comprises eight modules, ranging from fundamental aviation management to advanced topics like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), regulatory compliance, and carbon offset projects. Participants will also explore real-world case studies such as waste management solutions at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
With John Barden, Dean of Executive Education, and Rhonda Bush, Senior Assistant Dean, emphasizing the program’s relevance, they underscored the interconnectedness of AI, sustainability, and business strategy. Bush noted that the course bridges AI and sustainability through a strategic business lens.
In addition to addressing current sustainability strategies, the program also dives into the role of emerging technologies like electric and hybrid aircraft, and the immediate impact of SAF on reducing emissions from existing fleets. According to Khan, “SAF will remain crucial for long-haul flights while electric aircraft become viable for short-haul routes.”
