Sarawak, Malaysia – Marubeni Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with InvestSarawak, a state government agency under the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment, to commence a feasibility study on the production and sales of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using biomass resources. The signing ceremony took place on May 15, 2024, in Sarawak, Malaysia.
The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions, with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) implementing stringent CO2 reduction systems. Sustainable aviation fuel, derived from non-fossil sources such as biomass, holds significant promise as a low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuel. The demand for SAF is projected to rise as the industry seeks sustainable solutions to meet these environmental challenges.
Marubeni’s long-term climate change vision, formulated in March 2021, emphasizes green strategies as a core component of its mid-term management plan, GC2024. Through this partnership with InvestSarawak, Marubeni aims to foster new business opportunities and contribute to the economic development of Sarawak.
InvestSarawak, established in 2023, focuses on investment promotion, industry development, and international trade. The agency is led by CEO Timothy Ong Wye Ern and is based in Sarawak, Malaysia. This collaboration with Marubeni marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable fuel technologies and strengthening the region’s economic and industrial landscape.
