Infinium Energy’s Project Atlas has been named the winner of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance’s (SABA) next-generation SAF procurement, beating out more than a dozen competing advanced biofuels and eSAF projects. The planned facility targets approximately 100,000 metric tons per annum (MTPA) of eSAF at a carbon intensity 95% lower than conventional jet fuel, according to a press release issued April 9.
SABA launched this procurement in May 2025 with the stated goal of proving that voluntary corporate demand can anchor early-stage production projects commercially. Project Atlas’s selection is a meaningful data point for the power-to-liquid sector: it suggests that a structured procurement program, even without a government mandate behind it, can generate the offtake signal needed to move an eSAF project toward commercial agreements.
We believe voluntary corporate demand can be a catalytic spark to help new SAF production facilities get off the ground. Infinium’s selection as the winner of our next-gen procurement is an important milestone in proving this out. Kim Carnahan, CEO, Center for Green Market Activation
Under the deal structure, American Airlines will take physical delivery of the eSAF and manage logistics as the end-use airline. Corporate buyers receive SAF certificates (SAFc) through a book-and-claim model, enabling them to account for Scope 3 emissions reductions without requiring physical fuel delivery to each buyer’s location. Project Atlas is also being developed to produce EU-compliant RFNBO eSAF for European markets, targeting the ReFuelEU mandate, which requires 2% SAF in 2025 rising to 20% by 2035, with a dedicated eSAF sub-mandate beginning in 2030.
Project Atlas builds on Infinium’s two prior projects: Project Pathfinder in Corpus Christi and Project Roadrunner in Pecos, Texas. Infinium produces eSAF using waste CO2 and renewable energy. Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, said the SABA selection reflects growing commercial demand for next-generation power-to-liquid fuels and supports the continued development of new domestic production capacity.
Commercial agreements between the corporate buyers and Infinium are expected to be finalized later in 2026. When those terms are disclosed, they will give the eSAF market one of its first reference points for pricing voluntary demand against actual production costs.
