Farnborough, England – At the Farnborough Air Show, HIF Global and Airbus announced a significant partnership aimed at accelerating the development and adoption of e-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sets the stage for further agreements focusing on technical development, project execution, commercial strategies, and advocacy for e-Fuels.
Clara Bowman, Chief Operating Officer of HIF Global, emphasized the urgency of scaling up sustainable fuel solutions for aviation. “The International Energy Agency projects that aviation activity will double from 2022 levels by 2030. We are therefore in a global race to supply and scale up sustainable fuels to aviation, the hardest to abate of all the transportation sectors. Collaboration between HIF and Airbus will help accelerate the airline sector’s adoption of e-SAF and facilitate the industry’s transition to net zero.”
Analysis
e-SAF, or e-Sustainable Aviation Fuel, is produced through the methanol to jet fuel (MTJ) pathway, which involves combining recycled carbon dioxide (CO₂) and green hydrogen generated using renewable electricity. This process results in a synthetic fuel that can be seamlessly used in existing aircraft engines without modifications. By utilizing waste CO₂ and renewable hydrogen, e-SAF offers a significant reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared to traditional jet fuel, making it a vital component in the aviation industry’s efforts to achieve sustainability.
The partnership between HIF Global and Airbus is expected to address the technical and commercial challenges of producing e-Fuels at scale. HIF Global’s expertise in e-Fuel production, combined with Airbus’s industry influence, could significantly boost the adoption of e-SAF in the aviation sector
“Collaboration between HIF and Airbus will help accelerate the airline sector’s adoption of e-SAF and facilitate the industry’s transition to net zero,” said Clara Bowman, Chief Operating Officer of HIF Global.
In May 2023, HIF Global had already laid the groundwork for this initiative by partnering with Johnson Matthey and Honeywell UOP to design its first SAF production facility in the United States. This latest MoU with Airbus further solidifies HIF Global’s position as a leader in the e-Fuels market.
About HIF Global: HIF Global is at the forefront of the e-Fuels industry, developing projects worldwide to convert renewable energy into nearly carbon-neutral e-Fuels. The company is currently producing e-Fuels at its HIF Haru Oni facility in Chile and is developing additional facilities in Texas, Uruguay, Australia, and Chile.
