Beijing – BP plc, a major player in the global energy landscape, has made a notable investment of 354 million yuan ($49.56 million) in Zhejiang Jiaao Enprotech’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) unit, marking its entry into China’s expanding SAF market. The deal gives BP a 15% stake in Lianyungang Jiaao Enproenergy Co., which is constructing a 500,000-ton-per-year SAF facility in the eastern coastal city of Lianyungang. This facility is set to become one of the largest of its kind in the region, utilizing waste cooking oil to produce SAF, aligning with China’s push for greener energy.
This partnership with Jiaao Enprotech is significant as it highlights the first collaboration between a global oil major and a Chinese SAF unit, underscoring the potential for international alliances to drive sustainable aviation efforts. However, BP’s investment comes at a time when the company is strategically scaling back plans for some of its biofuel and SAF projects in other regions, such as Lingen, Germany, and Cherry Point, Washington, in favor of focusing on coprocessing of biofeedstocks at existing facilities.
Despite the scaling back of other projects, BP continues to expand its SAF and biofuel production capabilities in strategic markets like China, Australia, and Europe. The Lianyungang SAF plant is set to be a critical component in BP’s broader commitment to sustainable energy, which includes recent investments in SAF and green hydrogen production facilities in Spain and Germany.
“BP’s partnership with Zhejiang Jiaao Enprotech accelerates the growth of China’s green aviation sector, supporting global efforts to reduce emissions from air travel.”
China, as the world’s second-largest aviation fuel market, plays a vital role in global carbon reduction efforts. BP’s entry into China’s SAF sector aims to bolster local supply and reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint, supporting both regional and international decarbonization goals.
Analysis:
BP’s decision to invest in China’s SAF production through Zhejiang Jiaao Enprotech reflects a strategic pivot to high-potential markets amidst a broader reassessment of its biofuel portfolio. While BP is pausing certain projects elsewhere, this partnership demonstrates the company’s commitment to targeted investments that align with global efforts to reduce aviation emissions. The collaboration sets a precedent for other international players looking to tap into China’s vast aviation market and its growing appetite for sustainable fuels.
