Short Hills, NJ – Avina Clean Hydrogen revealed plans for a transformative $820 million sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility in Southwest Illinois, backed by Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).
Utilizing KBR’s cutting-edge alcohol-to-jet technology, the facility will produce up to 120 million gallons of ASTM-certified SAF annually. This aligns with the aviation industry’s decarbonization goals and Illinois’ clean energy ambitions, helping prevent 25 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually over the plant’s lifespan.
“This project underscores our commitment to pioneering clean fuel solutions that reduce carbon emissions, support job creation, and advance the state’s clean energy economy,” said Vishal Shah, Founder & CEO of Avina Clean Hydrogen.
The facility will leverage existing rail and pipeline infrastructure to supply major Midwest airports, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Its strategic location enhances logistics efficiency and ensures a lasting economic impact on the region.
Governor Pritzker highlighted the project’s significance:
“Avina Clean Hydrogen’s new SAF production facility will support our ambitious goals for a clean energy economy by substantially reducing carbon emissions and creating new jobs for Southwest Illinois.”
The initiative will create 157 full-time positions and support 1,000 construction jobs. It is bolstered by Illinois’ Reimagining Energy and Vehicles (REV) program and aligns with the state’s 2024 Economic Growth Plan.
“This project underscores our commitment to pioneering clean fuel solutions that reduce carbon emissions, support job creation, and advance the state’s clean energy economy.”
“This state-of-the-art facility aligns with the state’s efforts to create a cleaner economic ecosystem,” added Kristin Richards, DCEO Director.
