CHICAGO, Illinois — Aether Fuels has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production with the successful demonstration of its electric Tri-Converter technology, a cornerstone of the Aether Aurora™ solution. Unveiled on March 26, 2025, the demo showcases a system capacity over 50 times greater than the company’s previous pilot, validating its potential to transform waste carbon streams into scalable, cost-efficient SAF.
The electric Tri-Converter, developed in partnership with GTI Energy, serves as the “syngas generation engine” within Aether Aurora, converting feedstocks like biogenic CO2, renewable natural gas (RNG), and clean hydrogen into syngas for downstream Fischer-Tropsch (FT) processing. Unlike conventional setups requiring multiple reactors, this electrified single-reactor design leverages novel catalysts and electricity-driven heat to streamline operations, boost energy efficiency, and enhance yields. The demo’s success with real-world feedstocks—including RNG from bp, hydrogen from Invenergy, and logistics support from Certarus Ltd—underscores its flexibility, a critical factor in overcoming SAF production bottlenecks.
Aether’s CEO, Conor Madigan, emphasized the technology’s implications: “The aviation and ocean shipping industries need affordable sustainable fuels at scale, and the electric Tri-Converter is a transformative step forward. It drives critical process simplification and enables cost-efficient feedstock flexibility.” The results pave the way for the completion of Aether’s fully integrated Demo Plant later this year, targeting over one barrel per day of sustainable fuels.
GTI Energy’s VP of Carbon Management and Conversion, Don Stevenson, highlighted the collaborative roots of the breakthrough: “We’re proud to see technologies incubated in our labs being integrated into solutions for scaling low-emission fuels.” The project builds on GTI Energy’s gas-to-liquids expertise, supported by U.S. Department of Energy grants, with Aether now driving commercialization from its Chicago-area R&D hub.

The milestone was marked by a celebration at the demonstrator site, attended by investors, feedstock partners, and officials, including State Senator Laura Murphy (IL-28th), who praised the innovation’s dual impact: “They are leading the way in developing energy solutions that will transform how we power industries, transportation, and everyday life.” Aether’s Senior Director of R&D, Elie Fayad, added, “This represents nearly a decade of dedicated innovation,” spotlighting the technology’s role in improving SAF economics.
With construction of the Demo Plant on track, Aether Aurora’s integration of the Tri-Converter and advanced upgrading technologies positions it as a scalable, drop-in solution for decarbonizing aviation and beyond.
