CLEVELAND, OH — 4AIR, a pioneer in aviation sustainability, has revealed substantial advancements, including offsetting more than 6 million metric tons of CO2 since 2020—equivalent to removing over 1.3 million passenger cars from roads annually. This encompasses contributions via verified carbon offsets and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), alongside serving more than 150 clients from airlines to private operators.
“Our goal with launching 4AIR was to make sustainability accessible, and this success shows that there is a desire by business aviation to decarbonize, if the right tools are put in place,” said Kennedy Ricci, President of 4AIR.
A core element is the SAF Registry launched in 2023, utilizing blockchain for comprehensive traceability to avoid credit double-counting and comply with ICAO’s CORSIA standards. Partnered with entities like Neste, World Energy, ForeFlight, and Garmin, it supports accurate emissions reporting for over 500,000 flights through 4AIR’s Carbon Calculator. Amid IATA projections for SAF to hit 17.5 billion liters by 2030, yet with ongoing transparency hurdles, this tool reduces greenwashing risks, aiding stakeholders in obtaining funding and fulfilling requirements like EU ETS updates.
Operators and investors benefit from diversified portfolios via certified offsets from Gold Standard or VCS projects in reforestation and renewables. Scaling faces obstacles like SAF cost premiums and limited capacity, presently below 0.1% of global jet fuel demand. Emphasizing registry use could optimize audits, potentially lowering compliance expenses by 10-20% drawing from blockchain precedents in energy, and encourage collaborations for regional SAF facilities.
